Technology and Gender-Based Violence
A survey of providers showed 97% of those they serve report some level of technology-facilitated abuse in their gender-based violence cases. The misuse of technology is a type of abuse that is often anonymous and unnoticed. This can make it difficult to identify who is responsible, especially when it takes place over social media, apps, and gaming platforms.
What is Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence?
Technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) is the misuse or manipulation of technology to commit any harmful threat or act directed at an individual or group based on actual or perceived sex, gender, gender identity, sex characteristics, or sexual orientation. Technology-facilitated gender-based violence, often referred to as technology-facilitated abuse (TFA), is on the rise for teens. A 2022 Pew Research survey showed that 95% of teenagers are using social media, and 46% of teenagers say they are on the internet almost constantly. As technology advances in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI) and fake images (deepfakes), the risk to teens increases. Technology-facilitated gender-based violence can include:
Technology-facilitated domestic violence (TFDV)
- A pattern of behavior and coercive tactics perpetrated against an intimate partner with the goal of establishing and maintaining power and control through the misuse or manipulation of technology.
Technology-facilitated sexual violence (TFSV)
- The misuse or manipulation of technology to impose sexual activity or conduct on an individual without their consent.
Examples of TFGBV:
- Deepfakes/Image-based abuse
- Sextortion
- Cyberstalking
- A type of online harassment that uses technology (social media, apps. GPS location, trackers, etc.) to stalk an individual.
- Misusing passwords
- Obtaining another individual's passwords through fraud, deception, or pressuring someone in sharing it, and using the password for unintended purposes.
- Text/Call/Message "Bombing"
- Repeatedly sending multiple texts, messages, and/or phone calls that can be controlling, harassing, threatening, or sexually harassing in nature to an individual to maintain power and control over them or to instill fear in them.
- Cyberflashing
- The act of sending unwanted naked or sexual photos or videos on the internet, through an app, or by text message, to another individual.
