New York Goes Purple for Domestic Violence Awareness

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in New York state and across the nation. While we hope that you will continue to turn the state purple to raise awareness, this year, we encourage you to turn awareness into action by becoming an ally for survivors and their children.

Be an Ally

As an ally, you can provide information and resources to those in need. You can: share the state’s 24/7, free and confidential Domestic and Sexual Violence Hotline number (1-800-942-6906); believe a friend or loved one and listen without judgment; encourage workplaces to adopt a policy to improve protections for victims; and support local domestic violence programs. For more ideas about how to be an ally, check out our new Ally card, which you can download directly from our website.

National Wear Purple Day

This year’s national “Wear Purple Day” is Thursday, Oct. 18, so please wear purple and encourage others to do the same. Send photos of you, your colleagues, friends and family, your workplace, community groups, your pets and others to and we’ll share them at and @NYSOPDV (Twitter and Instagram).

Online Toolkit

For ideas about how to raise awareness and for information about how to help others, visit our online toolkit of free resources designed for everyone – from workplaces to government agencies to individuals and communities.

Risk Reduction Summit

On October 23, OPDV will host a Risk Reduction Summit at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Albany. This free event will feature presentations from law enforcement agencies and service providers collaborating to identify and respond to victims of domestic violence who are at high risk of being killed or seriously injured by an intimate partner. The information will benefit professionals interested in developing and implementing high-risk teams in their communities: police, prosecutors, domestic violence service providers and probation professionals, among others. Seating is limited, so you are strongly encouraged to register no later than October 15
