About the Dashboard
The Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Dashboard has been published by OPDV since 2007. Although it was initially published exclusively in PDF format, the Dashboard evolved in 2023 into a large-scale, interactive tool that allows users to navigate through various locations in NYS and compare data from previous years. An abbreviated PDF report that highlights key data and figures is also published alongside the digital Dashboard. With these tools, OPDV intends to increase accessibility and transparency of GBV data to the public, providers, and policy-makers of NYS.
Where the Data Comes From
Every year, OPDV collects the previous calendar year's data from multiple New York State agencies, including the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), NYS Office of Victim Services (OVS), NYS Office of Court Administration (OCA), NYS Department of State (DOS), NYS Department of Labor (DOL), and the NYS Department of Health (DOH). Data is also collected from the National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH), NYS Domestic and Sexual Violence Hotline (NYSDSVH), and the NYS Unified Court System public-facing website.
It is through these partnerships, particularly with OPDV's sister-State agencies, that the Dashboard is able to illustrate systems survivors and those impacted by GBV come into contact with (i.e. Law Enforcement, Social Services, Hotlines, etc.) and how the State addresses and responds to GBV.
Purpose/How You Can Use the Dashboard
The New York State Gender-Based Violence Dashboard contains statistical information detailing the State’s response to domestic and gender-based violence and the assistance that is provided on the local and state levels to victims, survivors, and children. Data is separated into either Services for Victims or Public Safety based on which category the data aligns with most appropriately. The Dashboard is accessible to anyone and can be used for a variety of reasons:
Legislatively, this point-in-time picture of the GBV landscape in NYS can be used to inform policy and practice for GBV prevention and response. It encourages development of data-driven laws and mandates, while trends and patterns can highlight relationships to policy implementation and effectiveness.
For service providers, the Dashboard can be used to visualize variables and needs for GBV services across the state. It can highlight county and demographic-specific data, allowing service organizations to devise internal policies, practices, and support tailored to the unique needs of their community.
For the public, the Dashboard acts as an educational resource where accessible GBV data can be found in one place. Its publication allows for increased government transparency and strengthens public advocacy efforts, civic discourse, and working knowledge of GBV in NYS through structured, digestible information.
