New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence
The Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV), created in 1992, is the country’s only cabinet level state agency dedicated to the issue of gender-based violence. It replaced the former Governor’s Commission on Domestic Violence established in 1983.
The NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence’s work is completed under four main bureaus: Bureau of Gender-Based Violence Prevention & Programming; External Affairs; Law and Public Safety, and; Finance and Administration.

Our Role
To advise the governor and legislature on policies and best practices; train professionals across the state and; serve as a resource on the issue of domestic violence.
