The New York State Domestic Violence Advisory Council

Council Background, Purpose and Function

Domestic violence is a complex issue that intersects multiple criminal justice and human services systems. As such, it cannot be effectively addressed by one agency alone. Since 2006, the New York State Domestic Violence Advisory Council has become a vibrant interagency entity that has driven significant policy changes at no additional cost to the state. It has also enhanced data collection, encouraged and facilitated dialogue and sharing among and between agencies and organizations, and strengthened OPDV’s efforts to increase public awareness and information sharing.

Enabling Legislation and Council Mission

Section 4 of Executive Law § 575 established the NYS Domestic Violence Advisory Council, whose mission is to:

The Council is directed to meet twice annually.

The New York State Domestic Violence Dashboard

The New York State Domestic Violence Dashboard is a joint project of the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and the Domestic Violence Advisory Council.  Updated annually, the Dashboard represents our ongoing effort to identify trends and key indicators related to the prevalence of and response to domestic violence within the state. First released in 2008 with data from 2007, the Dashboard aids in the development of policy and practice by providing information from a range of systems about the availability of resources and programs statewide.

Advisory Council Member Agencies

The Council includes representation from state agencies, as well as members appointed by the Governor, and members appointed by the Governor upon recommendation of the legislature. The appointed members represent a broad cross-section of service providers, including advocates, civil attorneys, prosecutors, judges and legislators. Current member agencies include:
